NGC4631 is a large edge-on
galaxy in Canes Venatici and is also known as the Whale and Pup. The pup
is the satellite companion, NGC4627, which is thought to be distorting
NGC4631. The Whale is 17' x 3.5' in size with a brightness of 9.8 magnitude,
making it a nice ccd target. Some optical distortions are present in this
image, despite excellent guiding. This shot was taken during the Chiefland
Spring Star Party.
